Blepharoplasty / Eyelid Surgery
As we age, the skin above and below our upper eyelids begin to droop and sag giving way to an old, tired look. This excess skin produces a “hooded” effect which can limit your peripheral vision. Also, the elasticity of our skin weakens and allows pockets of fat to form. This creates the appearance of puffiness. The lower lids may develop “bags.” The removal of this excess skin and fat around the eyes is the procedure called blepharoplasty. Orange County’s Atlantis Eyecare performs thousands of eyelid surgery procedures each year, helping people regain that youthful fresh look that the years have masked.
Our Newport Beach eyelid surgery can have a dramatic impact on the way others view you. Drooping eyelids and under eye bags portray tiredness, lack of vigor and even depression. In a competitive job market, giving this impression to a prospective employer might scuttle an otherwise top-notch job interview. Our blepharoplasty is a surprisingly easy surgery that corrects this erroneous impression in a few hours usually under a local anesthetic. Atlantis Eyecare patients who have received this procedure are delighted to see their true youthful vigor and enthusiasm reflected in the mirror each morning.
None of us can turn back the hands of time, but after eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty, you will regain the natural contour of your eyelids, thereby yielding a fresher, more alert, and youthful look.
Procedure
This procedure can be done either under local or general anesthetic. You can discuss your preference with your surgeon. Depending on the work that needs to be done, eyelid surgery will last 1 to 2 hours.
The surgeon will mark your natural upper eyelid crease line so the incision can be placed where it will not be seen once healing is complete. Excess skin and fat is removed and the muscle tissue is repositioned to create a lift. The incision is then closed with tiny sutures to minimize scarring.
The incision in the lower eyelid is placed either just under the eyelashes, or inside the eyelid. If the incision is just within the eyelid there will be no scar visible, but this option is only used when there is no excess skin to be removed.
Recovery
Most patients comment on how easy it is to recover from eyelid surgery. It is a relatively painless procedure that most patients quickly recover from. Eyelid surgery in Newport Beach is becoming very popular because of the ease of recovery and the comparatively short restriction of social activities. Many patients feel comfortable being seen in public within 10 days, with the average being about 2 weeks.
Your recovery depends on your personal ability to heal but also upon being compliant to the post-operative instructions. This has a large impact on recovery time and the overall results of the surgery. Patients who can rest, keep their head elevated and who frequently ice the surgical site find their recovery is remarkably fast with minimal bruising and swelling.
While the full benefit of blepharoplasty will take months to complete, the benefit of eyelid surgery is almost immediate. Going to a social event or returning to work is possible as soon as the immediate swelling has resolved, usually within a week. Giving an extra week for bruising and minor swelling to resolve will ensure that no one but the most astute observer will see the evidence of your surgery if you so desire. Makeup can cover any small amount of bruising very effectively.
Our Torrance eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is not only a cosmetic procedure, but may be warranted if you have Ptosis. Ptosis is usually a congenital drooping of one or both upper eyelids, and can affect children or adults. It can also be progressive and unilateral. Ptosis limits the upper peripheral field of vision and if unilateral, can give an unbalanced appearance of the face. Eyelid surgery is done to correct the levator muscle and lift the eyelid for an improved field of vision.
Other conditions which may require eyelid surgery are Ectropion and Entropion. These are conditions which usually occur as a result of aging. Ectropion is the turning outward of the lower eyelids. This can cause redness, tearing and discomfort. Eyelid surgery will correct the looseness of the lower lids and return them to a normal position. Entropion is the turning inward of the lower lids. This causes the eyelashes to rub against the eye and can result in infection. Irritation, redness, and pain can occur because of this malformation of the lower eyelids. Lower eyelid surgery will correct this and the symptoms will disappear.
